PM Vishwakarma Yojana: Eligibility, Training, Toolkit and Loan
Practical guide to PM Vishwakarma support for artisans in 18 trades, including certification, training, tools and loans.
Eligibility: Artisans aged 18+ in one of 18 listed traditional trades, subject to scheme exclusions and verification.
Understanding the PM Vishwakarma scheme
PM Vishwakarma is a central government scheme designed for self-employed traditional artisans who work with their hands and tools. Its benefits go beyond a business loan: eligible beneficiaries can receive official recognition, skill training, assistance for improved toolkits, concessional credit, digital-transaction incentives and marketing support. The scheme covers 18 specifically listed trades rather than every small business or service occupation. Government updates in September 2026 indicate that the programme had achieved its registration target, so candidates should verify whether new enrolments are available at a local CSC before travelling.
The 18 trades covered
Covered work includes carpentry, boat making, armour making, blacksmithing, hammer and toolkit making, locksmithing, goldsmithing, pottery, sculpting and stone work, footwear and cobbling, masonry, basket/mat/broom making, traditional toy making, barbering, garland making, washing clothes, tailoring and fishing-net making. Applicants must genuinely practise an eligible trade; merely selecting a matching category on a form does not establish eligibility. Local verification and the programme rules decide whether an application can proceed.
Eligibility and exclusions
A potential applicant must be at least 18 at registration and work as a self-employed artisan in the unorganised sector. The programme generally restricts benefits to one eligible family member. People employed in government service and their family members are excluded. Receipt of certain similar government self-employment credit support in the preceding five years may also affect eligibility, subject to scheme-specific exceptions. Check the latest official criteria before providing sensitive documents or making financial commitments.
Training, daily stipend and tools
Eligible artisans receive recognition through a PM Vishwakarma certificate and ID card. Skill verification is followed by basic training, generally five to seven days; interested artisans may progress to advanced training of fifteen days or more. Official guidance provides a ₹500 daily training stipend for eligible participants. Toolkit assistance of up to ₹15,000 is available through a structured e-voucher mechanism. It should not be confused with an unconditional cash payment simply for filling an application.
Understanding the two credit tranches
The first collateral-free enterprise loan may be up to ₹1 lakh, with an eighteen-month repayment tenure. A second tranche of up to ₹2 lakh may follow, with a thirty-month tenure, after the borrower meets additional conditions. The beneficiary interest rate is fixed at a concessional 5%; the programme also supports the lending institution through interest subvention. Completion of basic training matters for the first loan. A satisfactory first-loan account and relevant digital transactions or advanced training matter for the second. Bank credit approval is not automatic.
Documents to prepare
Keep Aadhaar, an active contact number, bank account details and ration-card information ready. A verification officer or authorised CSC may ask for additional details based on the applicant’s household and trade. Make sure names and account information are accurate and consistent. Never share OTPs, passwords or biometric credentials with unofficial middlemen. Registration through the authorised CSC route is described as free under official programme material.
Application and tracking
Visit the nearest Common Service Centre to ask whether enrolment for your trade is currently open. An authorised operator can guide the registration and identity verification process. Confirm every entry before final submission and retain a receipt or reference number. Applications pass through verification and, where applicable, training stages before financial benefits are processed. Use the official scheme portal for status and grievance information; no intermediary can guarantee certification or a loan.
